ABSTRACT:  This article devoted to Perec’s 300-page novel, La Disparition (1969) written without using the letter E, aims to demonstrate that playful quotations, borrowings and cultural references, notably to Lacan’s theory of the ‘prime signifier’, are used not only to enhance the semantic and symbolic value of the missing letter, but to stimulate the narrative and generate anecdotes.
